Welcome to the WSU Philosophy Blog

We’re upping our social media game!

The Department of Philosophy, in the Fairmount College of Liberal Arts, at Wichita State University, is adding a social media presence. We will have a Facebook page, Twitter Feed, Instagram … but probably not a Tik-Tok 🙂 No one needs to see any of us dance. So please find and follow us on any of those, @wsuphilosophy. (Oops, spoke too soon. wsuphilosophy was taken on Instagram. There we’re @shockerphi). There you’ll find department news and notifications, like upcoming talks, social events, new publications, and especially student accomplishments and updates.

But, in addition to the short updates, we also want a space to do some longer philosophising. That’s what will go on here at our blog: posts by faculty, students, friends of the department et al. Watch for the first post hopefully soon, by me, titled “The value in a liberal arts education: a personal testimonial”.

Who am I? I’m the present and new Undergraduate Coordinator for the department, Brian Hepburn. I’m an associate professor in the department. The role of the undergraduate coordinator is primarily responsibility for the success of our majors, as well as promoting the department and attracting new majors.

We have an excellent department, with excellent faculty and students. That deserves promoting. So please help us get the word out — follow us, like us, whatever it is one is supposed to do! And if you’re interested in guest blogging, drop me a line.

I'm an Historian and Philosopher of Science, with a PhD in HPS from the University of Pittsburgh in 2007. My longstanding research interest has been how formal languages facilitate problem solving in science, particularly the example of the revolutionary success of the analytic form of calculus in 18th century mechanics. Lately my research has turned to normativity in STEM practice.
